Brasil Correios eyes participation in bullet train

Brasilia – The president of Brasil’s Correios, Wagner Pinheiro will meet next week with the director general of the National Land Transport (ANTT), Bernardo Figueiredo, to look into the possibility that the State will participate in one of the consortia competing for the construction of high-speed train between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

According to the Post Office spokesperson, the state is interested in being part of a venture, depending on financial and feasibility studies. In early January, the Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo, said that the Postal Service could use the bullet train for the carriage of letters and parcels. About 80% of the traffic services of the Post Office are concentrated in metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The idea is to have a single car to carry post office commodities. The high speed train will connect the cities of Campinas, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The project has an estimated cost of $ 33 billion. The auction for the bullet train project is scheduled for April 29 and it is expected to be completed in 2015. [Article in Portuguese]
